Job Description

IBM is hiring a Software Engineer – Confluent for its Software division in Bengaluru, offering an exciting opportunity for fresh graduates and early-career software engineers who are passionate about distributed systems, cloud-native technologies, and enterprise platform engineering. As part of IBM's Hybrid Observability & Management team, you will contribute to the development of Unified Stream Manager (USM) and Confluent Control Center (C3), helping organizations efficiently manage, monitor, and secure their hybrid cloud environments. This role provides hands-on exposure to modern software engineering practices, cloud infrastructure, Kafka-based platforms, and enterprise-scale distributed systems. Working alongside experienced engineers, you'll gain valuable mentorship while building highly reliable, scalable, and production-ready software that powers digital transformation for global enterprises.

In this role, you will develop well-defined software features, write maintainable and thoroughly tested code, participate in design discussions, and contribute to improving observability, cluster monitoring, topic management, connector visibility, and operational workflows across hybrid cloud deployments. You will learn IBM's engineering standards, release processes, development tools, and software quality practices while collaborating closely with senior developers through code reviews and technical mentoring. The position also involves troubleshooting production issues, analyzing logs and metrics, participating in on-call rotations, and gradually taking ownership of a dedicated software component. This practical experience helps engineers develop expertise in distributed computing, cloud platforms, backend development, and enterprise software architecture.

Joining IBM Software means becoming part of one of the world's most innovative technology organizations, where continuous learning, collaboration, and technical excellence are part of the everyday culture. IBM encourages employees to explore emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud, Kubernetes, platform engineering, and modern observability solutions while working on products used by businesses across the globe. Engineers receive access to structured mentorship, career development programs, challenging technical projects, and opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge enterprise software. Whether you aspire to become a backend developer, distributed systems engineer, cloud platform engineer, or software architect, this role provides an outstanding foundation for long-term career growth within IBM's world-class engineering ecosystem.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver well-scoped software features for Unified Stream Manager (USM) or Confluent Control Center (C3), ensuring high-quality implementations that meet engineering standards and project timelines.
  • Write clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-tested code using modern programming languages such as Java, Go, or similar technologies while following software development best practices.
  • Contribute to enhancing hybrid cloud management capabilities, cluster health monitoring, topic visibility, consumer monitoring, connector management, and enterprise observability features.
  • Prepare concise technical design documents for assigned tasks, discuss implementation approaches with senior engineers, and incorporate constructive feedback into software solutions.
  • Participate actively in code reviews by both receiving and providing technical feedback to improve code quality, maintainability, performance, and overall software craftsmanship.
  • Troubleshoot production issues by analyzing logs, monitoring metrics, debugging application behavior, and collaborating with experienced engineers to resolve customer-facing problems efficiently.
  • Develop comprehensive unit tests, integration tests, and bug fixes to ensure application reliability, software stability, and long-term maintainability across enterprise deployments.
  • Learn and adopt IBM's software engineering methodologies, development lifecycle processes, DevOps tooling, release management practices, and design review standards.
  • Participate in on-call support rotations under mentorship, helping identify, investigate, and mitigate production incidents while gaining experience with large-scale distributed systems.
  • Take ownership of a designated software module over time, becoming the primary contributor responsible for feature enhancements, maintenance, documentation, and continuous improvements.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related engineering discipline. Candidates with equivalent practical software development experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • 0–4 years of software development experience, including fresh graduates with strong academic projects, internships, or relevant programming experience.
  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, operating systems, networking concepts, and concurrency.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Go, C++, or a comparable language used for enterprise application development.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, reusable, and thoroughly tested code while following coding standards, software design principles, and engineering best practices.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities with the capability to debug complex software issues, optimize performance, and contribute innovative technical solutions.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within cross-functional engineering teams, participate in technical discussions, and learn from peer feedback.
  • Interest in distributed systems, Apache Kafka, event-driven architectures, platform engineering, and cloud-native software development with a willingness to continuously learn emerging technologies.
  • Exposure through coursework, internships, or personal projects involving Kubernetes, Docker, cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform will be considered an advantage.
  • Contributions to open-source projects, participation in competitive programming, research work, or practical experience with observability tools and platform engineering concepts will strengthen the application.
