Job Description

Mastercard is hiring a Site Reliability Engineer I (SRE) in Pune to support the reliability, scalability, performance, and operational health of applications that contribute to Mastercardโ€™s global digital payment ecosystem. The role sits within the Business Operations team and focuses strongly on production readiness, automation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and resilient software operations. The selected candidate will work with senior engineers and development teams to understand operational requirements, support system maintenance, monitor applications, assist with deployments, and identify opportunities for automation. This is an excellent opportunity for engineers beginning their careers in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, cloud infrastructure, system administration, and production operations, while gaining practical exposure to enterprise-scale systems and reliability engineering practices.

As a Site Reliability Engineer I, the engineer will help developers build and operate more resilient applications by applying fundamental SRE and DevOps principles throughout the software development lifecycle. Responsibilities include supporting observability solutions, writing scripts using technologies such as Python, Go, or Bash, troubleshooting Linux/Unix environments, assisting with cloud infrastructure, and participating in deployment and monitoring activities. The role also introduces engineers to important reliability concepts including high availability, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, capacity planning, performance optimization, CI/CD, containerization, orchestration, and proactive monitoring. Engineers will participate in incident response, investigate system problems, escalate complex issues appropriately, and learn how technical decisions can influence application availability, customer experience, and operational performance.

The Mastercard SRE role also places strong emphasis on continuous improvement, risk management, IT service management, and operational discipline. Engineers will help identify reliability risks, understand business impact during incidents, support root-cause investigations, and contribute to preventative improvements that reduce future disruptions. Working alongside developers, senior engineers, and other technology teams, the candidate will gain experience with production readiness standards and operational best practices while developing a stronger understanding of enterprise infrastructure. Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Support Production Readiness: Assist development teams in ensuring applications meet operational, reliability, monitoring, automation, and production-readiness expectations before and after deployment.
  2. Monitor Application Health: Support monitoring and observability activities by reviewing metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and other reliability signals to help identify application and infrastructure issues.
  3. Develop Automation Scripts: Create and maintain basic scripts using Python, Go, Bash, or similar technologies to automate repetitive operational activities and improve system management efficiency.
  4. Troubleshoot System Issues: Investigate basic to moderate problems across applications, infrastructure, networks, and operating systems while using established troubleshooting methods to restore stable service.
  5. Support Cloud Infrastructure: Gain hands-on exposure to cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, assisting with application and infrastructure operations while following security, scalability, and availability requirements.
  6. Assist Deployment Activities: Participate in application deployment, configuration, monitoring, and operational activities while learning how software moves reliably from development environments into production.
  7. Apply DevOps Practices: Support CI/CD pipelines, containerization, orchestration, and automation initiatives that improve the speed, consistency, and reliability of software delivery.
  8. Improve System Reliability: Help identify reliability risks and contribute to improvements involving high availability, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, scalability, and application resilience.
  9. Support Capacity Planning: Monitor resource utilization and performance indicators to help identify capacity requirements, potential bottlenecks, and opportunities for infrastructure optimization.
  10. Participate in Incident Management: Support incident triage, issue investigation, escalation, and resolution while learning to evaluate technical problems according to their business and customer impact.
  11. Maintain Operational Standards: Follow established maintenance procedures, reliability standards, security practices, change-management processes, and IT service management guidelines.
  12. Collaborate & Learn: Work closely with senior engineers and development teams, participate in technical meetings and knowledge-sharing sessions, seek guidance when needed, and continuously strengthen SRE and infrastructure skills.

Requirements & Eligibility

  1. Technical Foundation: Candidates should have a solid understanding of fundamental computer systems, software engineering, infrastructure, networking, and operational concepts, with an interest in developing a career in Site Reliability Engineering.
  2. Programming & Scripting: Basic knowledge of Python, Go, Bash, or another scripting language is valuable for automating operational tasks, developing utilities, supporting monitoring, and assisting incident-response activities.
  3. Linux & System Administration: Understanding of Linux/Unix systems and fundamental system administration concepts is important for diagnosing application and infrastructure problems and supporting reliable production environments.
  4. Networking Knowledge: Candidates should understand fundamental networking concepts, protocols, connectivity, security, and network troubleshooting to assist with infrastructure and application reliability issues.
  5. Cloud Computing: Familiarity with at least one major cloud platform such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is beneficial for understanding modern infrastructure and scalable application deployment.
  6. Observability Concepts: Candidates should understand the purpose of metrics, logs, traces, monitoring, alerting, and observability tools and how these signals can help detect, diagnose, and prevent production problems.
  7. DevOps & CI/CD: Basic knowledge of DevOps practices, continuous integration, continuous delivery, containerization, and orchestration is useful for supporting automated and reliable software delivery.
  8. Reliability Engineering: An understanding of high availability, scalability, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, performance optimization, and capacity planning will help candidates develop strong SRE fundamentals.
