Virtusa is seeking enthusiastic and technically skilled candidates for the role of Consultant (Data Engineering) at its Pune office. This opportunity is ideal for fresh graduates and early-career professionals who are passionate about data engineering, cloud technologies, and modern data platforms. As a Consultant, you will work alongside experienced data engineers to build, optimize, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines that power business intelligence, analytics, and enterprise decision-making. The role offers hands-on exposure to Python, Apache Airflow, dbt Core, SQL, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and other cutting-edge technologies that are widely used across modern data ecosystems. Candidates who enjoy solving technical challenges and working with data-driven applications will find this role an excellent foundation for a successful career in data engineering.
In this role, you will contribute to multiple phases of the data lifecycle, including data ingestion, transformation, validation, monitoring, and documentation. You will assist senior engineers in developing reliable data pipelines, monitoring workflow execution, troubleshooting pipeline failures, and ensuring data quality across enterprise systems. Working within an Agile environment, you will participate in sprint planning, stand-up meetings, peer code reviews, and collaborative development activities that promote continuous learning and technical excellence. The position encourages developers to write clean, reusable, and testable code while following software engineering best practices and industry standards. As your technical expertise grows, you will gradually take ownership of increasingly complex data engineering tasks and cloud-based solutions.
Joining Virtusa means becoming part of a globally recognized digital engineering organization that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The company provides structured mentorship, real-world project exposure, and opportunities to work with enterprise clients across multiple industries. Throughout your journey, you will strengthen your expertise in cloud computing, orchestration tools, relational databases, data modeling, and modern data engineering practices. If you have a passion for Python development, SQL, cloud platforms, and building efficient data solutions, this role offers the perfect environment to launch and accelerate your career while contributing to large-scale digital transformation initiatives.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Assist in designing, developing, and maintaining ETL/ELT data pipelines using Python and Apache Airflow while ensuring reliable, scalable, and efficient data processing under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Support the development, enhancement, and maintenance of dbt Core models that transform raw data into structured, analytics-ready datasets for reporting and business intelligence applications.
- Monitor scheduled pipeline executions, investigate workflow failures, identify root causes of basic issues, and escalate complex incidents with detailed documentation and troubleshooting information.
- Participate in the complete data lifecycle by assisting with data ingestion, transformation, validation, cleansing, and documentation activities to ensure high-quality and consistent enterprise data.
- Perform data quality checks, validate transformed datasets, identify inconsistencies, and contribute to improving overall data reliability and governance across multiple projects.
- Collaborate with senior developers, data engineers, business analysts, and cross-functional stakeholders to understand project requirements and implement efficient data engineering solutions.
- Write clean, reusable, maintainable, and testable Python code while following coding standards, software engineering best practices, and organizational development guidelines.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, backlog refinement sessions, and peer code reviews to support collaborative software development.
- Utilize version control systems such as Git to manage source code, collaborate effectively with team members, and maintain proper version history throughout the development lifecycle.
- Contribute to continuous process improvement by documenting technical procedures, suggesting workflow optimizations, enhancing deployment practices, and supporting knowledge-sharing initiatives within the engineering team.
Requirements & Eligibility
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or an equivalent technical qualification from a recognized institution.
- Fresh graduates or candidates with up to 12 months of relevant technical experience, including internships, academic projects, freelance work, or hands-on software development experience.
- Strong understanding of Python programming fundamentals, including functions, object-oriented programming concepts, exception handling, file operations, and basic scripting techniques.
- Good knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts, including writing queries, data manipulation, joins, aggregations, normalization, and database design fundamentals.
- Basic understanding of ETL/ELT processes, data pipeline architecture, data transformation techniques, and modern data integration concepts used in enterprise environments.
- Familiarity with Apache Airflow or similar workflow orchestration tools is preferred. Exposure to scheduling, monitoring, and automating data workflows will be an added advantage.
- Knowledge of dbt Core, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Google Cloud Storage (GCS), Cloud Composer, or other cloud-native data engineering services is desirable and will strengthen your profile.
- Exposure to Kafka or other event-driven and streaming data technologies is beneficial, especially for candidates interested in real-time data processing and distributed systems.
- Familiarity with Git, software development lifecycle (SDLC), Agile methodologies, and collaborative development practices to support efficient software delivery and teamwork.
- Excellent analytical thinking, communication, problem-solving ability, and eagerness to learn new technologies. Candidates should demonstrate a proactive attitude, adaptability, and commitment to delivering high-quality technical solutions.
