Job Description:

The Software Engineer – Backend role at Modulr is an exciting opportunity to be part of a rapidly growing fintech organization that is transforming how embedded payments power modern businesses. Your work will directly support payment processing, fund disbursement, and API-driven integrations used by businesses across the UK and Europe.

As a backend engineer, you will collaborate within small, autonomous, cross-functional squads operating under Modulr’s tribes-and-squads model. These teams focus on delivering outcomes, not just outputs, allowing engineers to influence system design, architecture decisions, and technology choices. You will design, develop, test, and maintain microservice-based applications using Java and related technologies, while ensuring high code quality, performance, and resilience. Working in an Agile environment, you will actively participate in sprint planning, design discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This role also offers significant exposure to modern engineering practices and fintech-scale challenges. You will work with RESTful APIs, relational databases, cloud-native tools, and DevOps practices, gaining hands-on experience in building systems that operate at scale and under regulatory constraints. Roles & Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, analyze, and maintain backend services and components using Java and modern backend frameworks.

• Build and enhance microservice-based architectures that support high-volume, low-latency payment systems.

• Develop and maintain REST APIs with a strong focus on scalability, security, and performance.

• Work closely with product managers, QA engineers, and other developers to identify software needs and deliver effective solutions.

• Apply strong object-oriented design principles and design patterns to produce clean, maintainable code.

• Write and maintain automated tests using frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, and Cucumber to ensure code reliability.

• Participate actively in code reviews, design reviews, and technical discussions to uphold engineering best practices.

• Identify bottlenecks, risks, and technical gaps proactively, and either resolve them directly or advocate for improvements.

• Contribute to documentation including system designs, best practices, and reference architectures.

• Operate effectively in an Agile development environment, managing timelines and deliverables collaboratively.

Requirements & Eligibility:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• Strong experience with backend programming languages, particularly Java, with exposure to Java 8 or above.

• Hands-on experience or working knowledge of Spring, Hibernate, or similar Java frameworks.

• Solid understanding of object-oriented programming concepts and common design patterns.

• Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and writing efficient SQL queries.

• Understanding of REST API design principles and integration patterns.

• Familiarity with testing frameworks and test-driven or behavior-driven development practices.

• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems concepts is highly desirable.

• Awareness of DevOps tools and practices such as Docker, Kubernetes, and scripting is a plus.

• Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills, with a proactive and growth-oriented mindset.

Expected Salary:
